Herbert Stead (1857-1928) \u2013 the Congregationalist minister who established and ran Robert Browning Hall (a settlement in Walworth, London) \u2013 was a key figure in the fight for old age pensions in Britain. University and social settlements have pionered a range of innovations within adult education, community development and work with children and young people. We review the development of university and social settlements, educational settlements and social action centres and look at the current situation. It was to be the only Methodist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/infed.org\/dir\/settlements\/\">settlement<\/a>\u00a0and provided an opportunity for better-off Methodists to live in a deprived area and to share the lives of people there.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Poverty and opportunity: 100 years of the Birmingham Settlement\" href=\"https:\/\/infed.org\/dir\/poverty-and-opportunity-100-years-of-the-birmingham-settlement\/\">Poverty and opportunity &#8211; 100 years of Birmingham Settlement<b>. <\/b><\/a>Jon Glasby reviews the development of the settlement &#8211; and highlights some of its achievements.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Residential settlements and social change\" href=\"https:\/\/infed.org\/dir\/residential-settlements-and-social-change\/\">Residential settlements and social change<b>. <\/b><\/a>A distinguishing feature of the settlement movement is a community that lives and works among the most marginalised to achieve social change. Barnett\u2019s (1898) review of the contribution of university and social settlements.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/infed.org\/dir\/community-education-being-a-description-of-the-work-of-residential-and-non-residential-colleges-for-adult-education\/\">Educational Settlements Association<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Community Education. This 1938 publication provides an insight into the work of educational settlements at the time.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/infed.org\/dir\/working-girls-clubs\/\">Working girls\u2019 clubs<\/a>. Emmeline Pethick (1898) reflects on early, feminist, and highly innovative work with girls and young women.
